The Lighthouse agency is comprised of former adolescent parents who formally have organized to address the growing concern of teen pregnancy in New York City. Current preventive programs do exist within the city but are not reaching all of at risk population in the inner city neighborhoods. The Proposed program will be a center-based program servicing both young adults and their parents in coordination with local schools, and community healthcare providers to provide literacy and reinforce on the consequences of sexual activity while assisting youths in developing self-esteem and personal goals for a productive future. The timeline for this project is one year in order to firmly establish all needed funding resources.



Problem to be addressed



Teen pregnancy is a social problem whose affects both long-term and short-term go beyond the years of adolescents and those directly impacted by the problem. “Teen pregnancy costs U.S. taxpayers about $11 billion per year due to increased health care and foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of teen parents, and lost tax revenue because of lower educational attainment and income among teen mothers”(National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2011). Lighthouse wants to address this issue to better promote awareness with both teens and parents about sexual and reproductive health and empower are young adults by giving them the self- esteem and confidence to make an informed decision about their sexual behavior.
