20Th Century ‘Other Cultures’ Drama

In class we have read ‘Death of a Salesman’ by Arthur Miller. During this assignment I will be concentrating on one of the characters from this book and discussing what I learn about them and how they are presented. The character I have chosen is Biff.


At the beginning of the book we learn that Biff is sour with Willy and during a conversation with Happy he says that he feels Willy is always “mocking” him and he says that whenever he tells Willy something he can see the “twist of mockery” in Willy’s face. Biff also tells Happy that he’s “mixed up real bad”. He’s thirty-four, hasn’t settled with anyone, is back at home with his parents and can’t stick to a job. This tells me that he’s disorganized.


The relationship between the younger Biff and Happy seems good and strong. They were close and Happy idolized Biff; whenever Biff told Happy to do something he did it and was perfectly happy to do it for him. Before one of Biff’s football games Happy argues with Bernard because Happy wanted to carry both Biff’s helmet and shoulder pads but Bernard also wanted to carry something. Bernard says to Biff “Biff, I’m carrying your helmet, ain’t I?” when Happy says “No, I’m carrying the helmet.” after a short discussion Happy gives Bernard the shoulder pads, although he really didn’t want to and makes sure that he carries the helmet.


The relationship between Biff and Happy then changed as they got older. When Biff was younger Willy preferred him and was proud of his achievement with his football. He allowed him to slack with schoolwork because Biff was too wrapped up with football, he was so wrapped up in it that he even wrote ‘University of Virginia’ on his sneakers ...
