Hydration for Swimmers

The effect of hydration on swimmers has not been a subject of great interest in the past few decades. This is due to many studies focusing on other exercises that would interest the general public and are a lot easier to learn, such as running and cycling. However, hydration in general is a critical topic in the athletic society. Hydration is tremendously underrated and needs to be thoroughly educated in its importance to all athletes.


Many people do not think of water as a nutrient. However, water makes up around sixty percent of total body weight. Proper water intake is critical for many physiological systems to function properly and efficiently. Incredible as it may seem, water is quite possibly the single most important bridge to losing weight and keeping it off.


Although it is taken for granted, water may be the most important factor for permanent weight loss. In addition, water holds back the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits. This is primarily due to the fact that the kidneys cannot function properly without enough water. When they do not work as effectively, the load is discarded onto the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. However, if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, then it in itself cannot operate at full power. As a result, the liver metabolizes less fat and so more fat remains stored in the body and weight loss stops.
