Genetically Modified Potatoes

Genetically modified food originates from genetically modified organisms which have had a specific change introduced in their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. Genetic modification involves either inserting or deleting genes from an organism; selected individual genes with specific traits are transferred from one organism to another. Normal breeding could achieve similar results over a long period of time however it cannot obtain the exact same effects using a transferred gene from a non-related species which is possible for genetically modified foods. Food may be genetically modified to increase its shelf life, make it resistant to pesticides and insecticides, make food more resistant to spoilage during transport or improve the nutritional level. Potato breeders aim to produce new cultivars that are better adapted than existing ones to the conditions in which they are grown, stored and used. There are two ways to improve existing cultivars and they are: Produce new cultivars using sexual hybridisation, or genetic modification by transformation. Nowadays, a number of different genetic modifications of potato plants are available, including: potatoes that have an increased resistance to biological agents and factors of the environment and potatoes with improved nutritional value.


Potatoes carrying the gene Cry3A-


One of the most common potato plant pests is the potato beetle which often becomes resistant to insecticides. Modified potatoes carrying the gene Cry3A were produced to manage these beetles as after ingestion by the beetle, it passes on to its intestines and thus causes the death of the pest.


Potatoes with resistance to cold and frost-
