These are the words spoken by the master of horror Edgar Allan Poe. Was this man just deranged or did his poetry and stories come from a darker place. His parents deaths could have contributed or the other continuous deaths of family foster parents, his wife. Not to mention he was a major alcoholic, chronic gambler, and occasional opium user. How many tragedies could befall one man?

Mr. Poe was born in the year 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts to two thespians. Poe had 2 other siblings as well. A year after his father abandoned the family his mother died due to tuberculosis. Poe then was taken to Richmond, Virginia to the home of a merchant by the name of John Allan. From that point on Edgar Poe was to be known as Edgar Allan Poe, yet he was never officially adopted by the Allan family.

After moving with his family to Britain and Scotland for a few years Poe returned to Virginia to attend the University of Virginia. But after accumulating nearly $2,000 in gambling debts which his foster father refused to pay Poe eventually dropped out. He no longer felt welcome in Richmond, even more so once he found that his sweetheart was betrothed to another man. He then traveled to Boston.

After being unable to support himself in Boston, Edgar enlisted in the U.S. Army. He forged his documents under the name Edgar A. Perry and claimed to be 22 years old. He was quite successful in the military but he wanted to get out of his contract early so he told his commanding officer about his forged papers. The officer agreed to discharge Poe only if he spoke with his foster parent. Mr. Allan could care less ...
