Douglas McGregor

There have been various studies with the main objective of establishing an ideal ordnum of direction with several theories, experiments analysis and so forth. This opportunity this document will focus on the studies made by Douglas McGregor in 1960.


McGregor was born in 1906 in Detroit, Michigan. Management professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management whose 1960 book The Human Side of Enterprise had a profound influence on management practices. Visibly considered as an important member of the administrative school of humans’ relationships in the middle of the last century, where his theories have maintained their relevancy and significance despite the fact that, four decades have gone on with several theories and management ordnums.


McGregor defined his management ordnums depending on his conception of the human being, as a consequence, McGregor developed his “X” and “Y” theories, where he is aimed to the existence of two ordnums of direction; authoritarian ordnum and participative ordnum.


It is clear that each Individual has his own way to see the world nonetheless; McGregor with his book “The human side of enterprise” attached a complementary vision in a difficult moment. McGregor affirmed that in order to manage a company one can assume two positions (two suppositions) for example; either a position where individuals are receiving and executing orders or a situation where workers are entirely involved into the process and goals of the organization.
